Are you living your life? 5 ways to start now

We all know those people in our lives that appear to get it all done. We ask ourselves, how? As we binge on chips, Netflix, and chill. No judgment here. I used to be one of them. I still Netflix and chill. I mean have you seen Ozark? Amazing.

The difference is now I schedule AND follow through. I plan and manage my time for what is important to me. Netflix-ing included. People are not successful by accident or by chance. They work hard every day to achieve goals and pursue dreams.

They make sacrifices for their purpose and thrive on the rush that comes from a meaningful life. Believe it or not it is even more addicting than Ozark. I know, crazy.

If you are perfectly content where you are in life, this article is not meant for you. I’m here to help those of us that need a little motivation (myself included.) I feel at times we all could use a push in the right direction. Why do you think motivation is such a buzz word?

People are so hot on the idea that an inspirational quote or an enchanting speech can facilitate change. It definitely helps, but at the end of the day it is action. Doing the things you don’t want or need to do. That is the short answer. Nike says it well “Just do it.” If you do need some help finding your purpose or genuinely want to be happier, this one is for you.

1.) Find out what is really important to you. Prioritize those things. We all have the same hours in the day, days in the week, and weeks in the year. The only difference is that few of us have mastered the art of balancing what we want to do and what we need to do. If you are truly on your path those two will be the same.

Have you ever heard the expression “do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life?” It’s true. If what your pursing is truly your dream then it won’t feel like work. If you are not sure what that is, I suggest doing a little soul searching. I am not saying go quit your job (or do if that is your prerogative) but it never hurts to start a side project doing something you are passionate about.

2.) Stop wasting time. If you do my first point this will fall out on its own. There just is not enough time to waste. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. So, stop scrolling for hours on end, watching cats, and looking at babies. They are cute, I get it. I love babies!

It is just reality that we only have one life and a lot of us are not actually living it. You don’t need to escape your life through social media, Netflix, video games, emotional eating, or worse drugs and alcohol. I’m not judging. Trust me on that. I have a lot of flaws but judging others is not one of them. I have been to the bottom and if I can change, anyone can.

I didn’t realize my purpose until I actively began participating in my life. You have to just start doing the things that scare you, take a leap of faith! Follow your heart and listen to your gut.

3.) Write down your goals, to-do list and life plan. You can go as detailed or ambiguous as you want here. I do believe that writing down goals, to-dos and your life plan is so important. I believe in manifesting your reality so I will say be as specific as you can with this.

I am a type-A personality, extremely organized, and at times neurotic. Self admittedly I’ve had to push myself to chill the eff out. So, I had to actually be less specific and be more open.

I am guessing since you are reading this, you might need to tighten up your reigns. I am all about being a free spirit, but do you really want to end up regretting all the things you never did? When you start a business you have to have a plan, so why wouldn’t you do that for your life?

Think about it. You can be spontaneous and flexible with your scheduling and plans. It is just a good idea to know what you want and how you plan to get there. Prepare to plan, or prepare to fail.

4.) Let it go. Whatever that is for you. Something is holding you back from doing the things you know you should (want to) be doing. Let go of expectations. Let go of the need for validation. Let go of perfection. Let go of the idea that you can plan for everything. We are in a worldwide Pandemic right now and I doubt many of us planned for that.

Guess what? Life goes on. Don’t twist this I truly am sorry for anyone suffering and experiencing loss. I empathize with that greatly. It is truly traumatic and especially for those of us who didn’ t see it coming. My point here is we don’t know what is going to happen. That does not mean we should live in fear, it only means that you have to prepare for the unexpected.

You can control one thing and one thing only. Yourself. Your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and actions. Let go of the petty stuff. Your house doesn’t need to be perfect every minute. If you have kids you know what I’m talking about, it’s unrealistic. Who wants to spend their days worrying about it?

Let it go! I’m telling you, it’s not important. I was going overboard with planning, cleaning, organizing, overthinking, and scheduling. That’s been a major part of myself I’ve had to look at and release. If you are doing that, I will give you the answer- let it go. Just like that. It will be uncomfortable at first but your quality of life will be so much better.

5.) Just say no! I know I have said this before but it is so important. We only have so much time and energy to give. Why not spend it on things that matter? Like family, a passion, or helping others! That’s what life is all about.

The more you give the greater purpose you have. It’s never too much and the Universe will take notice. I am not saying don’t help others. I am saying if you don’t want to attend your Aunt Sally’s book club and will feel uncomfortable the entire time because you actually don’t give an eff about historical literature, do not go!

Just say no. Stop feeling guilty, and stop living your life to please others. Start living the life that YOU want to live. It does not matter what other people think of you.

At the end of the day, you have the life that you have chosen. Make the choices that are right for you. Make the choices and don’t let others choose for you. Don’t settle for whatever you get, and work tirelessly in pursuit of what matters to you.

Channel your energy into something or people you love. There is never enough love to go around. I believe that so strongly. We all have the ability to make a difference. You really can’t go wrong when you are moving towards love, happiness, and purpose. We have to live spontaneously too. It’s all about balance.

Prioritze happiness. It is freeing to realize that life is so much more than a number of followers, money in the bank or status at our place of employment. You are more than that.

Create habits to facilitate change while also living in the moment. Being present and enjoying life is equally important to doing work. Or you can find that sweet spot and do them both at the same time. I hope this helps to inspire you to start taking action in your life.

You are the driver, you can take another road. It is not too late and the possibilities are endless. At the risk of sounding like a self-help guru, I bid you adieu. Get out there and start living!
